Phoenix Boxing Club to rise again from the canvas !

Exciting plans are now well advanced for Attleborough to have it’s own amateur boxing club based and running in the town with the aim to have boxers competitively boxing for the town under the name of Attleborough Boxing Club. The Club will also carry the logo of a Phoenix due to it’s bounce-back-ability in getting back off the canvas from successive blows in getting the club off the ground.

The newly formed club has been searching for suitable premises and this final piece of the jigsaw has finally been located in the centre of town. The club already has a strong dedicated committee in place and several local Attleborough sponsors have already stepped forward and the new club is currently organising fund raising events. It has also already successfully applied for funding and purchased new training equipment. The club has also been busy actively improving the qualifications of all it’s coaches and officers.

It has ambitious plans to achieve Clubmark Status as soon as possible and is currently in the process of applying to join the Norfolk Amateur Boxing Association.

Attleborough has a strong pedigree of boxing in the town which can be traced back to the 1950’s and this will be a club for the people of Attleborough, based in the town of Attleborough and for local youngsters to compete under the name of Attleborough.

Any members or potential sponsors who would like to join this ambitious club are asked to contact Jon Dennis ( Coach ) on 07768820480.

For further information please contact Jeremy Burton ( Attleborough Boxing Club – Chairman ) on 07770886732
There are pleanty of inconsiderate buggy users in town, you just have to ask any of the girls who work in the supermarkets. they regularly get hit by them with no appology, just abusive language.
A quiet word in thier ear won't do, many of them are deaf as a post.

IMHO, the mobility scooter/buggy user, cyclists & Horse riders shoule be licenced & insured before they can use the road.

I am glad Manic MD that you have received a letter from the police, I trust now that your Son will keep to the road in future and that you see he has adequate protection such as a cycle helmet, and that you make sure he wears it.

I have no gripe about very young children riding on the pavement when accompanied by a parent, they have to learn somewhere and be taught road sense.

The road system in Attleborough, or anywhere else for that matter, isn't meant to take cyclists into consideration, the cyclists are meant to learn to use them properly. The question of cycle lanes has been considered, but the paths are just not wide enough to accomodate them. By definition, roads are not dangerous as they are inanimate objects, the danger comes from the users, cyclists and car drivers are both to blame.

The buggy user you mentioned beeping you was probably simply to let you know they were there, and moving rather more quickly that yourself. Only those capable of 8mph are allowed on the road by the way. Yes there are some who are less than considerate apparently, but I have so far not come across one, and if I did I would have a quiet word in their ear.
What other crimes would you like the police to ignore?

What you and others don't seem to realise is that cycling on the pavement, is not only dangerous (people have been killed and injured), but it is also against the law.

If we allow people to get away with it, then they will expect to get away with other crimes.

I have said before, what we really need is a zero tolerance policy, then and only then will crime statistics tumble. Unless of course our latest Lord Chief Justice carries on with the policy of his two predecessors and keeps criminals out of jail instead of banging them up for long periods.
My 11 year old son was stopped in early October for riding his bike on the pavement by the local PCSO's, October the 10th I believe it was.

I recieved a letter from our local Inspector this week regarding this over a month later!

Secondly, whilst being spoken to by the said PCSO's (2 of them) a child rode past on the pavement with the parent riding in the road, my son questioned the PCSO's as to why they were not stopping that child too, he got the reply,

"because they are under control and their parent is with them"

What utter rubbish, how can a parent be in control when they are riding a bike on the road themselves - what are these PCSO's thinking of?

Now to me thats a kind of double standard. It is a myth that if your wheels are below a certain size you are allowed to ride on the path, this has been confirmed by the Inspector in writing to me previously. So, irrespective of age all cycles should be on the road is my interpretation of the law.

Whilst I agree that some, not all, who cycle on the pavement do not consider those on foot there are also some who do consider and respect other pavement users as I experienced the other day, a young lad approached me on his bike saw me coming and dismounted as he got to me.

The road system around our town does not take people on bikes into consideration at all with no cycle paths and no cycle zones at pedestrian crossings (as they have in most towns and cities around the UK).

Maybe the town council should approach this issue as our roads are very dangerous at the best of time let alone in the dark mornings and evenings due to excess speed and inconsiderate drivers.

I would like to also point out the issue of mobility buggies too on pavements, as with those that cycle there are good and bad, I got beeped at the other day in town on the pavement by an elderly person wanting to get by me - should they also be subjected to riding these buggies on the roads of Attleborough? I am sure that would do so much for traffic flow. I consider these to be as much of a menace as some cyclists.

And my final observation goes to the PCSO's who Police our town, practice what you preach and stop riding down the alley way between Fairfields and Dairy Farm Court, you have been seen twice recently doing this and next time you will be reported! Maybe I ought to get CCTV and take a still of them doing this and send it to the press, I am sure it would raise a few eyebrows!
Have to disagree with you there two-stroke - I have seen lots of pavement cycling whilst pushing round a pushchair too - makes for uncomfortably tight squeezes next to the busy town centre road especially when the cyclists don't have the courtesy to even slow down. As I feel it is "an issue" and they are after all doing an illegal act, I'm supporting the police - it simply needs to be dealt with.

Ah, 'Sorry mate, I didn't see you', the familiar cry of the idiot motorist when he hits you on your pushie or your motorbike. What they really mean is 'Sorry mate, I couldn't be bothered to look properly and just pulled out anyway'. Casper is correct, the majority of motorists need educating in at least looking for things that are smaller than they are. Perhaps we should make them ride a push bike for one week in the year, they may learn to look a bit more carefully then. I know, that is an impractical idea, but motorists do need to be far more observant than they are currently, cocooned in their nice warm little world, music blaring, heating up full blast, not paying attention to what is going on around them.

Maybe it's just me, but I have only rarely seen cyclists on the pavement in town and do not see that we have that much of a problem with it. Police time and energy could well be far better spent on other issues.

Casper, I hope you were not too badly hurt by the motorist who knocked you off.
_________________
Live your life in such a way that when your feet hit the floor in the morning Satan shudders and says

Now all we need is the police to look into the safety of the cyclists while riding on the road. Are they going to go round educating drivers of the need to be on the lookout for us? Are we going to get cycle lanes?
I don’t use pavements unless I have to as they really arn't wide enough, but now the nights have drawn in I have had to stop using my bike, not because its cold and wet, but because even though my bike is lit up like a xmas tree and I wear a hi viz vest I was knocked off my bike by a car who 'didn’t see me' lucky I wasn’t hurt just shaken, but I could have been.

Some times people ride their bikes on the pavement safely and slowly and for their own safety.

I might drive my car on the pavement so I don't get caught up in all the congestion in town,
Hahaha,

Whether cycling on the pavement is safer that on the road, I'm sure Mr E & the Police will still tell you, It's still Illegal.

There is a group of people, myself included, who are trying to get a new youth centre up and running.

We the 'Attleborough Youth Project' committee have been donated a large portacabin similar to the one the football club got. The plan is to use it as a youth centre managed and run by the youths of the town (adult supervision will be provided) during the evenings but to rent it out to other groups during the day, making it a self funded unit. But as with all projects there are a few things we need in order to get it up and open by next spring. The centre will be open for 12 to 17 year olds (in separate areas) and to run from approx 4pm to 9-10pm possibly, not everything is yet set in stone.

We have still to get a new site agreed the footings dug and laid and utilities connected, then we will have to get it moved to the new site, (once its been agreed), its needs a complete new roof, and then internal walls and then finally we can start to fit it out. We are hoping to put in a pool table, dart board etc, a music room (with soundproofed walls) computers possibly.

We are in the process of applying for every grant we can but we still need volunteers to help get it moved and built, and to 'man it' once its open, trades people to lend their skills, and of course any other additional funds we can get. It has been estimated that the total cost will be between £40,000 and £55,000. Thats a lot to raise and we need all the support we can get both from the youths to push for it and the adults of the town to support its use.

So please pass this round, we really need the communities support. And of course if you want to volunteer please let me know. We are holding our next meeting at the town hall at 6.30 next thursday 20th. Both youths and adults welcome.

On thursday this week there were four cars parked side by side in the road part of the car park at the back to makays. I know the market takes up a lot of spaces but where are the traffic wardens when you need them?

I also noted our lady mayors car parked illegally thursday too, not for the first time I might add! seems one rule for them and another set for us is still in force.
Great.
